Richards J. C., Rebnke J. M. & Duce I. R. 1995. In uifro studies oo tbe relative sensitivity to ivermectin of Necator americanus and AncyIostoma ceyhnicum. International Journal for Parasitology 25: 1185-1191. Experiments were carried out to compare tbe sensitivity of Ancylostoma ceyhnicum and Necator umericunus to ivermectin (IVM) and pyrantel in vitro. Loss of motility and inhibition of ingestion by IVM were compared and A. ceyhicum was found to be approximately 40-50 times more sensitive to IVM than N. umericunus. Roth species showed a similar sensithity to pyrantel. Uptake of 13HJIVM across tbe cuticle was compared and shown to bc unlikely to account for tbe differences in sensitivity to IVM between tbe two

Sensitivity to ivermectin and pyrantel of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Necator americanus.

Experiments were carried out in the hamster to compare the relative susceptibility of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum to treatment with ivermectin. A. ceylanicum was found to be 300 times more sensitive to the anthelmintic with a 50% effective dose (ED50) of the order of 10-15 micrograms kg-1 body weight whilst that for N. americanus approximated to 3-5 mg kg-1. Furthermore, where...

Molecular Detection of Ancylostoma duodenale, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, and Necator americanus in Humans in Northeastern and Southern Thailand

The 2 principal species of hookworms infecting humans are Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale. Case studies on zoonotic hookworm infections with Ancylostoma ceylanicum and/or Ancylostoma caninum are known mainly from Asian countries. Of these 2 zoonotic species, only A. ceylanicum can develop to adulthood in humans. In the present study, we report a molecular-based survey of human hook...

Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum: development of protocols for dual infection in hamsters.

Two-day-old baby hamsters were infected initially with the infective larvae of hamster-adapted human hookworm, Necator americanus (NaL3). After a specified period they were again infected orally with infective larvae of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (AcL3). Three weeks after the second infection they were killed and the establishment of N. americanus and A. ceylanicum was assessed. The effect of diffe...

PCR-based coprodiagnostic tools reveal dogs as reservoirs of zoonotic ancylostomiasis caused by Ancylostoma ceylanicum in temple communities in Bangkok.

A survey of gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and humans from temple communities in Bangkok revealed that 58% of dogs and 3.4% of humans, among those sampled, were infected with hookworms utilising faecal flotation techniques and microscopy. A previously established polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-RFLP approach was utilised to determine the species of hookworms infecting dogs found positive fo...
